The rules, regulations and the general safety information of ratchet straps.
- Do ratchet straps need testing?...
- In short no, but we do anyway, our ratchet straps have been tested to breaking strength with printouts to prove.
- Do ratchet straps go out of date?...
- No they don't, they are however not meant to be used if
- 1) they have any cuts/tears in them.
- 2) Don't have a blue manufacturer label showing the specifications of the ratchet strap or is faded in any way.
- 3) have been cut shorter due to previous damage and the length is different to what the manufacturer label says
- What are the ratchet strap regulations?...
- The rules surround this are that the correct breaking strength must correspond to the weight it is holding, for example...
- You need to secure 3000kg, with a 5000kg breaking strength strap, they typically have a SWL of 2500kg, so you would need at least 2 x 5000kg breaking strength straps.
- people tend to confuse Breaking strength with the SWL (safe working load) this is the maximum weight one single strap can secure.

- Typically as a minimum it should be weekly but in an ideal world you should be checking them before every use for rips/tears and any splits. DVSA will hand out fines for any ratchet straps found being used that are defective.
- Who is responsible for checking ratchet straps are in good condition?
- Ultimately its the drivers responsibility as they are trusting them to prevent any shed load incidents and injury to themselves or others either out on the public roads, or in a yard loading or unloading.
